Story of Smart Materials

Common name widely used for substances, structures, materials or systems which are designed to have a specific response to an external stimulus and be reversible upon removal of stimulus is smart materials. Basically smart materials are designed materials with more than 1 property which can be changed in a specific manner to an external stimuli and revert back to their original state upon stimuli removal.

The first recorded observation on smart material was seen in 1932 on gold-cadmium. In 1938, the second smart material transformation was observed on brass. In 1962, shape memory effect in Nickel-Titanium was transformed. Following these, several alloys and shape memory effects came into research and smart materials arouse in field of materials science.

Smart Materials have several names like intelligent materials, responsive materials etc. and they are of several types depending on their response like Piezoelectric materials, Photomechanical materials, Self-healing materials, Magnetocaloric materials, Thermoelectric materials, Chemoresponsive materials, Electroactive polymers, shape memory alloys and shape memory polymers. Polymorphs, ferrofluids, dielectric elastomers, optical fibers, graphene, carbon nanotubes and quantum tunneling composites are some of the modern examples of smart materials.

All over the globe, smart materials research has widened and intensified as they seem to find their applications in several sectors like aerospace, automobile, healthcare, construction, electronics, Mechatronics and so on. Taking for example, NASA’s Glen research center has been investigating development of shape memory alloys (SMA’s) for application as adaptive structures and actuators. SMA’s are alloys which can deform at low temperature, have memory and recover to their original shape upon heating. SMA’s have been ideal for high force, large stroke and modest frequency response operations. Recently a SMA has been developed to replace a traditional gearbox/motor actuation system. Several other applications where SMA’s can be applied are Adaptive structures, actuators, heat detection devices, medical devices, High-temperature automotive, aeronautics and military.

Smart Materials have come into picture, are being researched and hold scope to a large extent in our future. What’s your take on future and advancements of smart material applications? Let us know by writing to us at smartmaterials@memeetings.com

Smart Polymers

The stimuli-responsive polymers or aptly called smart polymers are materials which are sensitive to various factors like temperature, humidity, pH, electric and magnetic field. The responses generated by these materials vary from conductivity, permeability, transparency and so on. The unique properties of these smart materials make them applicable in high end applications of engineering and healthcare.

The Smart Polymers are classified into several types depending upon their properties and response towards external stimuli. The several types of smart polymers observed today are:

  •  Temperature responsive polymers
  • pH responsive polymers
  • Photo responsive polymers
  • Magnetically responsive polymer gels and elastomers
  • Enzyme-responsive polymers
  • Shape memory polymers
  • Smart polymer hydrogels
  • Self-healing polymer systems
The properties, synthesis and applications of several of these polymers vary individually. Several branches of science and engineering namely materials science, chemistry, polymer science and technology involve themselves in these studies.

Smart Polymers are relevantly used in bio-medicine specifically targeted drug delivery. Some other cases where they are used in biomedical area are self-adaptive wound dressings where humidity-sensitive polymers are employed which automatically regulate moisture balance in and around the wound.

Other than the smart polymer carriers employed for drug delivery applications, smart polymer substrates can also be used in tissue engineering applications. Smart Polymers have also been employed in medical devices which are used in surgery and diagnosis. Other than medicine, smart polymers have found their applications in biotechnology, food industry and several other sectors too.

Most common application of the smart materials in biotechnology sector is bio separations and immunoassays. In different sectors we can find them employed for optical data storage, food packaging and textile applications. Futuristic applications of these smart polymers can be seen in environmental biotechnology for irrigation systems. Though the research and future remains open for these materials so does the problems on degradation, toxicity etc.

Graphene--An Elegant Smart Material

Throughout the globe, research on graphene has become one of the most vibrant and active research fields in materials science, nanotechnology, condensed matter physics and engineering. Wikipedia states that graphene is just another allotrope of carbon, containing one atom thick layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb (hexagonal) lattice.

Ever since its discovery in 2000’s, graphene has been exploited for various applications with its outstanding properties. The shocking factor for this widely developed research area is that few scientists out there experimented with an adhesive tape and stacks of graphite which led to the discovery of graphene and Nobel Prize. Some of its impressive properties are:
  • ·         Faster electrical conductivity
  • ·         Best thermal conductivity.
  • ·         Thinnest strongest flexible and transparent material
  • ·         Great inertness and chemical stability
  • ·         Large and nonlinear Diamagnetism
Other than their outstanding properties, graphene has been extensively produced in different forms through various synthetic methods.

Exfoliation, Sonication, Centrifugation, Electrochemical synthesis, Tang-Lau Method  Langmuir-Blodgett method and several other means are employed to produce graphene in its various forms like HSMG, Bilayer graphene, Graphene Nano ribbons, graphene gyroid, aerogel, Exfoliated graphite nano-platelets, Germanene, Graphane, Graphyne, Phagraphene and so on.

Graphene finds its applications in electronic and energy industry sector due to its impressive electrical and thermal conductivity hence you can view its appearance in mobiles, solar cells, LED’s, touch panels, wearable devices, semiconductors, capacitors, home appliance manufacturers and several other electronic devices. Graphene also finds its applications in aerospace, automobile, healthcare and manufacturing industries.

The commercial applications and market of graphene is seen recently (2015-2017’s) after several debates and breakthrough’s in research and toxicity factor of graphene. Recent news on graphene states that they can be used as hair dyes. Finding applications from an electronic sector to the cosmetic sector, what’s the next industry sector in line for graphene to step foot in? Let’s explore at Smart Materials Meet 2018 at Dubai on April 19-20, 2018.

Materials for Health and Biomedicine

Semiconductor microelectronics showed huge advancements in 1970s, with the discovery of silica as the electronic material. Researchers like John Greenwood worked on silicon and glass for their application in micro fabrication or MEMS.  New classes of silicon and glass devices, including pressure sensors, accelerometers and gyroscopes were invented which were quickly adopted by the automotive industry, as well as the emergence of micro-valves, micro-pumps and gas/bio sensors, applicable in life science and other industrial applications. MEMS were utilized by HP, Canon and Epson companies to produce inkjet printers. Motorola and Bosch made MEMS Sensors and it followed with many other companies investing several dollars on MEMS for their products.

Though the MEMS market increased; the quality, production, size, volume, flexibility, competition and several other factors bought forward the replacement of silicon and glass with polymers. Polymers showed advantages like greater mechanical strain and less brittleness than silicon. Their thermal properties, biocompatibility and low cost also favoured them.

Though Silicon and glass are unlikely to become extinct they could soon be replaced by polymer alternatives in many applications.  New classes of liquid and dry film polymers are being developed by mixing with conductive, shape memory, photosensitive, piezoelectric, plastic magnet, electroactive, OSTE and polypyrrole elements.

Such polymers or smart materials are opening opportunities in the biomedical engineering, stem cell therapy and life science fields particularly,  for example the lab on chip application, biomaterials, dental implants, artificial muscle actuators, invasive robotic microsurgery, actuators to stimulate tissue and bone growth, bio-sensors and µTAS systems.

The journey of polymers from silicon is surely interesting. If you wish to recite such journeys of any smart materials or gain insights on them then join us at Smart Materials Meet 2018 at Dubai as a speaker or a delegate.
